Genetic, Behavioral and Lifestyle risk factors for complications of Type 2 Diabetes in a Mexican American
We propose to expand the existing funded and approved cohort study we have established among the Mexican-American population in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Our strategy is therefore to exploit the interaction of genomics with behavioral, socioeconomic and lifestyle measures to provide the most robust measures of the components which predispose and lead to T2DM and its complications.

Rapid Characterization of Mycobacteria and Drug Resistance in Paucibacillary TB
Our School is located in South Texas, less than 1 mile from the Mexico border, in a region with one of the highest rates of drug resistance (DR) and multi drug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) in the United States.

Our successful collaboration with tuberculosis health officials from both sides of the border provides us with easy access to patient information and specimens.

EXPORT - Creation of a Hispanic Health Research Center in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV)
Develop research capacity in a nucleus of individuals in partner minority serving academic institutions in the LRGV; transfer of scientific technology and expertise to the LRGV; create capacity for collecting, managing, and disseminating information on Hispanic Health locally, regionally and eventually globally; develop community participatory research and intervention strategies specific for Hispanic (Mexican American) cultures; develop the HHRC into a collaborative center for Hispanic Health Research with other institutions.
