ABSTRACT
Collaboration to Provide Educational Outreach for the DSN Program
The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHSC-H) School of Nursing (SON) and the University of Texas at Brownsville (UTB) Department of Nursing are collaborating to establish an educational outreach site of the Doctoral of Science in Nursing (DSN) program on the UTB campus. Both schools will work together to recruit applicants, support them through the application process, collaborate to advise students admitted to the DSN program, offer DSN courses on the UTB campus using distance learning technologies and promote collaboration of faculty in advising students, teaching and research. Success of this program will increase the number of nurses in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV) who successfully complete doctoral education in nursing and are prepared to teach in nursing education. Additionally, success will improve the future capacity of UTB faculty to provide doctoral education in nursing on the UTB campus.
This project is timely. The MSN program at UTB has been growing steadily since its beginnings in 2000. Fifteen students are now enrolled for an MSN degree. These nurses must have the opportunity to obtain the next level of education as they are the next generation of nursing leaders in the valley.
